Girl Dinner
This is Abbozzo Gallery’s second annual group exhibition comprised of both local and international emerging artists. In preparation for this exhibition, our team was inspired by the emergence of girl trends that started within the realm of social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram and eventually crept into real life during the second half of 2023.
If you are unfamiliar with the term “girl dinner” but have noticed a sudden increase in bow accessories and ballet flats, you were witnessing social media’s “girl” trends making their way into mainstream society. Girl dinner as we know it started as a trending sound on TikTok saying, “this is my dinner…I call this girl dinner”. The sound soared in popularity, got remixed with music and was overlaid on countless videos of unconventional dinner plates filled with mismatched snacks, each post consisting of a different combination of its creator’s personal favourites. Many journalists and critics have written about the current girl trend cycle and what its rise to prominence in pop culture tells us about the current state of feminism.
Our ambition for this exhibition is to give emerging artists a platform to share their intimate experiences of girlhood through their practice. The combination of artists and mediums in this group exhibition is meant to echo the delightful varieties that make up a quintessential girl dinner.
Artists included are: Alana Kinsey, Alicia Gimeno, Charlotte Blake, Ehiko Odeh, Holly Stapleton, Hyun Young Yang and Katie Butler.
