Built For Art: A Secret Garden

October 1, 2016 to October 2, 2016
sunset to sunrise

Each year, we participate as an Independent Project in Nuit Blanche Toronto. This year, in partnership with artists, shops and galleries, we present Built For Art: A Secret Garden. Join us October 1 from sunset to sunrise when over 20 projects transform the hallways, corridors and public spaces of 401 Richmond.

On October 1st at 6:57 pm, 401 Richmond transforms into a one-stop, high-energy artistic experience, with site-specific, interactive installations representing a synergy between on-site galleries, tenant artists, and the broader arts community…all under one roof!A looming brick façade runs nearly the length of a city block along Richmond Street West at Spadina Avenue. Enduring and unassuming, 401 Richmond holds its ground in the midst of towering developments. Walk through the front doors and find yourself in a veritable urban oasis; warm brick walls, antique hardwood floors, dreamy sun-soaked windows, and a plethora of potted plants line the hallways of this heritage warehouse-turned arts and culture hub. Artists, cultural producers, microenterprises, not-for-profits, galleries, festivals, and shops fill the building and give it life. Here, the seeds of great ideas are nurtured and allowed to flourish. Support, growth, and life characterize many aspects of the building from its green spaces to its diverse tenant community.401 Richmond offers A Secret Garden in the concrete jungle.

YOUR VISIT

401 Richmond (the building) will be open all night, but that doesn’t mean all of our projects, galleries, and shops will be. We’ve indicated the hours for all our artists and participants, so you’re not disappointed. There is an elevator in the building and accessible washrooms on the 1 st and 4 th floor. Please use the Barrier-Free entrance on the NE Entrance side of the building which also has an automatic door entry.

Jacquie Green
We Made Our Mark
A collaboration between Nuit Blanche visitors of 2014 and artist Jacquie Green.  Over 500 people started drawings on tablets set out by the artist, who then added to and changed them, recording a real-time video of the creative process.
Location: Urbanspace Gallery

Karen Miranda Abel
GeoGarden: A subterranean symphony in C
A large wall installation consisting of crystallized violin cases arranged in an organic composition. The interiors of over 20 salvaged instrument cases – some close to a century in age – were propagated with mineral salt crystals of the octahedral structure. The work considers the musicality of crystallization processes with reference to the ancient, oblong-shaped “cathedral geodes” formed in cavities inside volcanic rock. Creating the work required an intense 4-month studio practice during the winter of 2013 in which the artist grew the crystals on the restored velvet linings.
Location: Main Hallway
ALL NIGHT

Refresh: a satellite project by the Open Studio Membership Committee
Refresh will create a physical space to explore the fleeting nature of image creation and dispersal in contemporary visual culture. Images produced by local artists will be screenprinted and pasted in layers on a wall space at 401 Richmond. As each layer of images is pasted up, the one below will be obscured, creating a continuous cycle of proliferation and obliteration of images.
Location: Lower Level, B003
UNTIL MIDNIGHT

[R]e[D]ux Lab
NOVA
NOVA is an interactive, walk-through installation that mimics the homonymous natural phenomenon of space. Moving through the dim layers, users will experience a display of proximity-activated lights that become infinitely reflected to create an illusion of expansive space within the seemingly narrow passageway. Once visitors have exited, the lights begin to die off and return to their dormant state, waiting to be re-ignited by another encounter throughout the night.
Location: 2nd Floor Hallway outside studio 204

In ‘A Short History of Nearly Everything’ Bill Bryson explains, “We have a universe. It is a place of the most wondrous and gratifying possibility, and beautiful, too. And it was all done in about the time it takes to make a sandwich.” Explore the secrets of the history of our universes, from the microcosm of artist Michelle Polak’s family history to the macrocosm of the Big Bang, by joining her for an intimate performance in the freight elevator – all while she makes a sandwich.
